Critical Care Medicine
Patients who are admitted to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit are suffering from a life-threatening illness or injury or require intensive care to recover after major surgery. These patients are admitted to Lucile Salter Packard Children's Hospital from communities throughout Northern California. Helicopter or ambulance transports bring children to the unit . Other critically ill or injured children are admitted from the Stanford Health Services emergency room. Children who have had heart surgery or other major operations stay in the Intensive Care Unit until they are well enough to do without supervision by our faculty physicians who specialize in intensive care medicine and can be managed without the life support and monitoring capabilities that are provided in the unit. Most patients who are admitted to the unit have acute respiratory failure, shock or acute neurologic deterioration. With the medical expertise of our staff and techniques now available, even children with these very serious medical problems remain in the Intensive Care Unit for only about two and a half days.
